Project Background

The Zimbabwe COVID-19 Response and Essential Health Services Project (ZCREHSP) was implemented to strengthen the country's health system resilience while ensuring continuity of essential health services during the pandemic. This comprehensive initiative supported vaccination campaigns, health infrastructure development, and community engagement across all districts in Zimbabwe.

The project successfully implemented vaccine deployment, risk communication, community engagement, climate-friendly health system strengthening, digitalization initiatives, and infrastructure improvements. Through collaborative efforts with the World Bank Group, Ministry of Health and Child Care, and implementing partners like Cordaid, ZCREHSP demonstrated the power of integrated health system approaches in crisis response and recovery.

VHW Training Programme
Village Health Workers Training

Trained 2,009 VHWs across all 25 districts with updated Community Health Package including SGBV response, adolescent friendly service delivery and climate-responsive practices.

Solar Energy Infrastructure
Climate-Friendly Infrastructure

Installed 7KW solar systems at 16 health facilities and distributed 250 Solar Direct Drive refrigerators for sustainable vaccine storage.

Medical Equipment Distribution
Medical Equipment Distribution

Procured and distributed over $3 million worth of medical equipment including anaesthetic machines, ultrasound scanners, and laboratory equipment.

Community Outreach
Integrated Community Outreach

Conducted outreach across 25 districts reaching 278,963 clients with family planning, ANC, PNC, EPI, and chronic disease care services, with a special focus on adolescents and young people

Digital Health Systems
Health System Digitalization

Implemented Impilo EHR system with COVID-19 vaccine tracking and established digital Grievance Redress Mechanism across 15 pilot institutions.

Tricycles

Procured and distributed 60 solar driven ​tricycles, and 90 motorcycles to health facilities for improved transportation of medical supplies and equipment.
